SHATTERING THE CAREER STEREOTYPES
Being a career counselor, I encountered number of students in my day-to-day life, who are absolutely directionless about their career. I believe that they blindly follow trends and not put much thought into it. Ironically, the decision that needs a lot of contemplation, is taken under the influence of parents, teachers, peers, etc.
I think that students generally chooses those streams that sounds fascinating, however, they even don’t know what actually it is, what career prospects it holds. Recently, I met one teenager who wanted to pursue digital marketing course, and when I asked that “what do you know about this course, and what are the career prospects” he simply replied that my sister is a digital marketer and she earn quite well, so I thought that this fields is a good fit for me as well.”
I then questioned him, what is digital marketing? What is the difference between traditional marketing and digital marketing, but he was clueless. I then added, are you interested in doing something that is related to technology. He vaguely replied that he is interested as it will generate more income, but he told me in confidence that he is more interested in Fashion. He further added, that this field is women oriented, and lacks scope.
I instantly replied, that how can you say that, Designers like Sabyasachi, Manish Malhotra, Amit Aggarwal, Gaurav Gupta are birds, aren’t these men? They are the leading men of the industry. They are global icons in fashion.
The boy could not reply. Then I counseled him that he needs to follow his passion and if need be, we both will talk to your parents.
CHOOSE YOUR CAREER WISELY
This is one of many incident that proves there is a serious lack of knowledge regarding careers and their credibility. I believe that counselor need to be deployed in educational institutions to enlighten children as well as parents. It is a high time that India needs more than just doctors, engineers, CA’s and MBA’s.
There is no stream that can be called as a best career, rather, there is a best or perfect career for all of us.
Whenever, we talk about our career, we usually look or search for those options which has a high demand in the market, or through which we can generate more income. However, apart from this, we should cater significant elements that are of utmost importance in choosing a particular stream.
ELEMENTS NEED TO BE CONSIDERED WHILE SELECTING A CAREER PROSPECT
INTEREST
The fundamental thought process behind this element is that if an individual is interested in what they are doing, then it can be declared that an individual is active, generate more creative ideas, and always show curiosity that ultimately results in positive outcome.
PERSONALITY
This element includes all the features, characteristics, habits, qualities an individual possesses. The characteristics that an individual gains, will be from two significant sources, and that are, either through genes, or through environment, means the physical surroundings in which he or she is brought up.
INTELLIGENCE
In simple terms, we can express intelligence as an ability to solve problems, ability to learn from mistakes. Furthermore, one of the renowned psychologist, name, Howard Gardner, proposed nine types of intelligence - Natural, Musical, Logical-Mathematical, Interpersonal, Bodily-Kinesthetic, Linguistic, Intrapersonal and Spatial. According to him, intelligence cannot be defined in one single term and he believes that intelligence are of nine kinds and a person might have high intelligence in some fields and have low intelligence in another. In addition, intelligence definitely plays a pivotal role while making career decision.
APTITUDE
Here, we are talking about that qualities an individual possess by birth- means the innate qualities an individual have. In simple terms, we can state that the natural strength an individual have that ultimately aids him/her to choose a particular stream.
ALWAYS REMEMBER
We all are human beings, we all are not same, we should understand that everybody has different abilities, skill set, qualities, personalities, intelligence, interest, and aptitude, and therefore, parents, teachers, students should consider such elements while choosing a particular stream.
Moreover, just looking at its scope, and the pay scale, students generally opt popular courses, but as a result, unfortunately, many of them couldn’t able to find good jobs or their dream jobs. They might work hard, but only working hard doesn’t helps you to achieve your dream, one should be smart enough also. One should take or indulge in that stream that matches their interest, personality, intelligence, and aptitude.
CAREER COUNSELING SESSIONS
To judge such factors one can take career counseling sessions in order to find appropriate field for themselves. During these session, psychometric test and two-way discussion helps people to find relevant stream, which not only helps them to achieve their goals but also helps them to achieve satisfaction and peace.
Furthermore, whenever, we talk about these sessions, people generally think that these sessions are meant for adolescents, however, it is not true at all, as person can change his/her career anytime, even the professionals also need such sessions in order to find a suitable career options.
Generally, many people believe that these counseling sessions are of no value, it is just an another way to earn money, but in reality, these sessions and psychometric test helps a lot in deciding which career option will work best for them. But there is one condition that sessions should be conducted in a proper manner and people should do the psychometric test in a genuine manner, so that experts can extract better results, and accordingly guide them. Sometimes, during screening, people lie, or in a psychometric test, they might give socially desirable answers, because of which the counselors might not get up to the scratch results.
Furthermore, it is not necessary that an individual will enjoy each and every part of his/her stream or relish each and every part of his or her job, but if he/she choose an appropriate prospect, then it can be surely state that he/she will enjoy most of it.
CONCLUSION
Remember that everybody has some talent, we just need to identify that, that’s all. If an individual indulge in a stream that is not of their interest, of if he or she does not have an aptitude of that stream, then it will end up into mess.
Decision of making a career should not be a random decision, in this era, we all have plenty of choices, and therefore, select it appropriately, and otherwise, an individual may end up in regretting his decision in the future.
The decision of choosing your career is extremely significant for your happy life. So, do what you love, do what makes you happy, choose your profession according to your abilities and interest.
